What do you want to be when you grow up? I ran into an old friend and about 10 minutes into the conversation my mind drifted away to consider how blessed I am to have made a decision. ”Must be the MUSIC!” (old skool record by Secret Weapon) I can’t remember a time when I did not know what I wanted to do with my life. It had to be MUSIC! How that would look?, Where I’d do it?, In what capacity? To what degree? I didn’t know. (See my feature article in www.airplay360.com

Many things have added themselves to my list of skills and aspirations since my “decision”. I’m a teaching artist for the New Jersey Performing Arts Center. And for my own company, I hire professional actors and musicians to perform the school curriculum through dramatic presentations. and I help “would-be authors” realize their dream by publishing their manuscripts.
I believe even these things came to be because I committed to move towards a “specific” goal. The Bible promises that we will be given more (gifts and acumen) if we prove to be responsible with what we already have (Matt 25:23). If we change direction with every wind or good idea, how will we ever gain ground or make progress? It also says the race is not given to the swift but to the one who endures til the end (Ecc 9:11). As I tuned back in to hear my friend drone on about how “lucky” I am to be doing what I love and how miserable it is to still be looking for the “right career”, I could remember grown-ups stooping to ask me “Sooooo, what do you want to be when you grow up? They were on to something. Maybe no one asked my friend because they’re all grown up but still has no idea.
